Stowaway series

070609 Stowaway series
8 x 10 oil /masonite
c.o. M.Upfold  Sarnia Ont.

Donated to the Derek Upfold benefit auction Dec 2009 Sarnia Ont.

I recently found this small piece behind some larger canvas's that I had forgotten about, evidently left to dry in a safe area.
The theme from 2008 Exhibit" Still and Life" is still current in my work, even older subjects lap over newer ones and some seem to get buried under more pressing ones, I return to favorite subjects often , for many reasons besides the subject or compositions I find it interesting by contrast of time and lessons learned,.. Good knowledge source found in reinterpreting subjects over again thru time, its self revealing on many levels by its context contrast,...also inspired paintings always inspire other paintings, I like the saying...follow the boucing ball.

Snowy Owl

Snowy Owl
30 x 24 Cast paper 1993
C.O. K. Kelly  Calgary Alberta

Results from a paper making /casting class I took in Calgary.
I liked the shadows and tones that resulted,.. inspired from a painting done in highschool in 1980 of a snowy owl, At the time of this paper casting I still liked the pose of the bird originally copied from a photo.
It expresses a continued interest in natural patterns and delicate grey scale tones elements that still interest me.

Twilight Geese

Twilight Geese I
38 x 38 Acrylic/canvas 1992
C.O. Unknown
Inspiration from sketches of geese in the park outside of T.O. before moving to Calgary.
Painting from a graphite life drawing done in the park and imagination ,focusing on natural textures and patterns, composition, and focus on negative space lighting. I liked the composition alot and thought to make it a painting to add that twilight blue sky and a sense of coolness and energy to the dark contrast foreground.

Loon in the Mist I

Loons in the Mist I
16 x 20 acrylic 1987
c/o N. Lasenby

One of a pair of loons painted while residing in the country along the St.Clair river. Evidently Loons mate for life and I tried to capture the concept of two loons calling to each other on a misty lake.
I've always had an interest in wildlife since I can remember spending much time wandering around the forests ,water areas and fields collecting and observing the local flora and fauna in the area we lived.
At the time of painting this,Canadian wildlife painter Robert Bateman may have been at his peak of popularity I appreciated his repect for the Canadian wildlife and he consideres himself more of a naturalist such as an Audubon illustrator, then an artist he takes a very scientific approach to his paintings using accurate info about enviromental habitats of each animal he paints,I could relate to his passion for the subject and I think we share that commonalitiy. I think his paintings helped to raise awareness of the greatness and importance of our unique Canadian wildlife.
