Snowy Pines and Night Light

Snowy Pines & Night Light
28 x 24 acrylic 1988
c/o p/c

Two early acrylics on paper I call them paint sketches in composition ,colour , patterns and hinting at negative space lighting an element that I presently still enjoy.

I remember the time before orange sodium street lamps to when black silouette trees waved to an evening breeze against a clear crisp backlite indigo sky.
These loose simple paintings were a backlash from the more reserved realism studies I was doing also at the time, I remember that I wanted a better understanding of colour at this time along with the other disciplines I was learning , alot of paintings At this period are very diversified for this reason, they represent a destructuring and restructuring of the elements of what I wanted in my paintings.

I sense lingering influence from the McMicheal Gallery trip in high school.. over time resulted in this fusion of the Group of seven with Indigenous native influence , evident in 'flat' bright blocked in colour, patterns and design .
